Great Sieges of History
£5.35
Prefaced by an introductory chapter on the evolution of techniques for both besiegers and besieged, this is an account of 16 of the most significant sieges in history, from Acre to Khe Sanh. It examines the fortress construction and defensive weaponry from Greek fire to countermines. Techniques for breaching these defences are analyzed, with special consideration given to the revolutionary effects of the introduction of the two greatest offensive aids - gunpowder and, more recently, air power. The sieges described are dramatic military and human stories, often including great feats of engineering and endurance under the severest pressure.
