His evocation of the atmosphere of this beautiful coast and the islands, his account of he history and slave trading, his observations on Islam with its various sects and feasts, his visit to a leper colony on the island of Pemba, and (not least) the harassing vicissitudes of his domestic affairs, make a book which is as enjoyable and rewarding as any he has written
